Jennifer Huygen writes on Justice Sinclair's visit east

Burchells associate lawyer Jennifer Huygen profiles our recent visit from Justice - now Senator - Murray Sinclair in the Winter 2016 edition of Nova Voce, the magazine of the Canadian Bar Association's Nova Scotia Branch.

As Manitoba's first Aboriginal Judge, a long-serving Justice of Manitoba's Court of Queen's Bench, and perhaps most notably as chair of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Justice Sinclair casts a long shadow.  With his keynote address at the Association's annual Bench and Bar dinner in January, Jennifer writes that Justice Sinclair "charmed the audience with his sense of humour and humbled them with his important message of reconciliation."

With the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Justice Sinclair traveled to and heard from members of 300 communities across Canada.  Many survivors of residential schools "grew up with no sense of who they were as individuals and as a part of a collective.”

On March 18, 2016 Justice Sinclair was appointed to the Senate of Canada.
