Human Rights

The firm’s lawyers have significant experience advising and representing clients on all aspects of human rights.

On complaints to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission Burchells acts for clients throughout the investigative and adjudicative processes. We also have significant experience conducting and responding to appeals to the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal from the Commission's procedural decisions and from decisions of independent boards of inquiry.

Burchells regularly advises employers and employees on the duty to accommodate disabilities in the workplace, on the hallmarks of discrimination-free interviews, and on discrimination-free dismissal. We also assist employers dealing with addictions in the workplace while respecting employee rights. We provide practical advice to employers on achieving discrimination-free work environments and investigating employee allegations of discrimination.

Our lawyers are also regular contributors of papers and presentations at conferences and meetings on various topics relating to human rights.
