David completed undergraduate studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, before receiving his law degree from Dalhousie University in 1997. He has been with Burchells since his call to the bar and became a partner in 2007. David chairs our civil litigation group and sits on the firm's articling committee.
David represents a variety of liability insurers, with a special focus on long term disability defence and subrogation. He acts for several disability carriers and regularly attends and presents at conferences on disability litigation for lawyers, claims managers and human resources directors. David also has extensive experience litigating the nuances of CGL and other complex, ad hoc insurance products.
In the commercial sphere David acts for commercial landlords and developers in transactional and leasehold disputes, advising on such issues as distraint, preservation of landlords' rights, and collection.
David has appeared before all levels of Nova Scotia court, the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and many administrative tribunals including, among others, the CPP Appeal Board and the Labour Standards Tribunal. David also has experience with alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and the judicial settlement conference process.
As an involved member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society and the Canadian Bar Association, David is past-chair of the CBA Nova Scotia's Legislation and Law Reform Committee and the organizing committee for the 2011 Canadian Legal Congress in Halifax. He brings his harmonica and guitar to the firm's annual participation in the March of Dimes Battle of the Bands.
