David completed
his undergraduate degree at McMaster University in Hamilton,
Ontario, before graduating with a bachelor of laws from Dalhousie
University in 1997. He has been with Burchells since his call
to the bar, and became a partner in 2007. As a member of our
civil litigation group David's practice centres on insurance
and commercial matters.
David represents insurers in health and property loss claims,
with a special focus on long term disability defence and subrogation.
He acts for several disability insurance providers and regularly
attends and presents at conferences on disability aimed at
lawyers, claims managers and human resources directors.
David's corporate and commercial litigation practice includes
advising on and dealing with disputes surrounding commercial
leases, employment contracts, business agreements, media and
defamation issues, transportation, construction, and technology-related
matters. He also represents clients in complex cases involving
multiple parties, difficult procedures and interwoven legal
issues.
He has appeared before all levels of Nova Scotia court, the
Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and many administrative
tribunals including, among others, the CPP Appeal Board and
the Labour Standards Tribunal. David also has experience with
alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and the
judicial settlement conference process.
As an involved member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society
and the Canadian Bar Association, David chairs the CBA Nova
Scotia's Legislation and Law Reform Committee. He is also
a part-time faculty member at Dalhousie Law School and the
Faculty of Dentistry.
