Cheryl Canning is a partner in Burchells' litigation team.
Cheryl has dedicated her career to insurance litigation, representing and advising national and international insurers on a wide range of retainers, including defence of property and casualty claims and on coverage disputes. She regularly presents at and attends courses and workshops hosted by, among others, the Insurance Institute and the CIP Society, on issues such as claim investigation and fraud. She has appeared before all levels of court in Nova Scotia and has a wealth of experience in mediation and alternate dispute resolution.
Cheryl is actively involved in Canadian Defence Lawyers, the Canadian Bar Association's Insurance Section and the Nova Scotia Insurance Women's Association, and has a leadership role in the firm's association with The ARC Group Canada.
Cheryl's professional involvement includes sitting as vice-chair of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society's Credentials Committee, chair of the Lawyer's Assistance Program Committee, and member of the board of the Lawyers' Insurance Association of Nova Scotia. In 2011 she was appointed Atlantic Provinces Representative to the Canadian Bar Association's Legal Profession Assistance Conference board of directors.
Cheryl is called to the bar in Nova Scotia (1998) and Prince Edward Island (2011).
A native Newfoundlander, Cheryl now lives in Dartmouth with her husband Andrew and their two sons, where they are active members of the Banook Canoe Club. She directs her charitable work to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
