Brian joined Burchells
in 2001 upon his return to Halifax from Toronto. Brian
is a partner and a member of the Litigation Practice Group.
He concentrates his practice in commercial litigation
and administrative law. He is a member of the Ontario
bar (1995) and the Nova Scotia bar (1996).
Brian was raised in Halifax before attending Queen's University
(B.A.,1990) and the University of Toronto (LL.B.,1993).
He began his legal career in Toronto with the Ontario Ministry
of the Attorney General, where he practiced civil litigation
and was then a Crown Attorney. Later Brian was litigation
counsel and an acting manager in the Enforcement Department
of the securities regulator now known as the Investment
Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (formerly the Investment
Dealers Association of Canada).
Brian has experience
in each of the three traditional litigation forums: the civil
courts; administrative tribunals; and the criminal courts.
He has expertise in several regulated fields, particularly
securities and financial products and services. Brian
has been quoted in the national media on securities law
issues. Since returning to Halifax, Brian has developed
expertise in the the areas of privacy and freedom of information.
On the pro bono front, Brian is counsel to The Right to Know
Coalition of Nova Scotia, and is the legal advisor to the
board of Music Nova Scotia.
Since returning to Nova Scotia, Brian has twice been a speaker
at the annual Professional Development Conference of the Nova
Scotia branch of the Canadian Bar Association , has been a
workshop leader and speaker at national conferences,
has contributed chapters to the national
Annual Review of Civil Litigation, and has served as an instructor
at Dalhousie Law School.
