Situated in the heart of downtown Halifax, Burchells LLP offers a wide range of legal services to regional, national and international clients. We act for multinational corporations, major banks, insurance companies, associations and all levels of government, as well as individuals and small businesses. The firm prides itself on having the resources to handle virtually any retainer while maintaining deep connections with the people of our community.
Burchells LLP traces its origins to 1912, with the partnership of MacLean, Burchell and Ralston. Alexander K. MacLean was later Attorney General for Nova Scotia, sat as a member of Parliament and was ultimately appointed to Chief Justice of the Exchequer Court of Canada. James L. Ralston would go on to serve as Federal Minister of National Defence in the MacKenzie King government during the Second World War. Following his involvement as counsel to the inquiry into the 1917 Halifax explosion, Charles J. Burchell, K.C. was Canada’s First High Commissioner to Australia and South Africa. C. J.'s son C. W. Burchell, Q.C., and grandson Thomas Burchell, Q.C., followed in his footsteps at the firm, becoming leaders in the community and the profession.
The tradition of public service set by our founders continues to guide the firm today.
Burchells LLP enjoys participation in a network of law firms in major government and commercial centres across North America and around the world. The benefits of this network are passed along to our clients.
